(Thanks to sewbunnybum for answering my question!) i decided to make him a passport sleeve because he has recently become a U.S. citizen and has also recently acquired his passport and is planning on taking a trip back home.
(obviously i didn't actually sew the flaps closed when i took these pictures. but these pics show the details i added to this present much better this way. i have since sewn the flaps.)
the tutorial was really easy to follow. i have yet to see if it fits because i don't have a passport of my own and so i'll have to wait until father's day when i give this present to my father.
